Summer smog led to dramatic deterioration in air quality

Air pollution in 2003 soared to the highest levels for a decade - a fact which did not deter the Environment Department from boasting of "progress on better air quality". The summer heatwave led to unusually persistent smog - and provisional estimates suggest that a single two-week pollution episode may have brought forward as many as 800 deaths in the UK.
