Dip in enforcement as pollution incidents increase

Prosecutions and other formal enforcement actions by the Environment Agency showed a pronounced dip last year, even as the number of environmental incidents was increasing sharply. The Agency's effectiveness in both tracking down and prosecuting offenders responsible for the worst pollution incidents also declined.
