Whitehall retreats on mandatory consortia for chemicals under REACH

The Government has backed away from its earlier insistence that chemical manufacturers producing the same substance should be required to form consortia to get it registered under the EU's proposed REACH regime on chemicals. Instead, it is working with the chemical industry in an attempt to devise an alternative route to its preferred "one substance: one registration" system, the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee heard on 9 February.
