Contaminated land is still overwhelmingly dealt with using "dig and dump" techniques, according to a survey sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry.1 "Very little penetration" of process-based techniques was seen by the end of 2001, the survey says, painting a picture of an industry unready for the reduced landfill capacity that will result from the EU landfill Directive.
