Water companies will be spending up to £450 million to remove nitrate and pesticide pollution from drinking water during 2005-10, the industry association Water UK estimates. The figures point to increasing problems with diffuse pollution which must be addressed promptly if the requirements of the EU water framework Directive are to be met.
