Confidence in the EU’s regulatory system for protecting people and the environment from unauthorised genetically modified crops and foods has been badly damaged by disclosures that GM maize may have been unlawfully imported from the USA for several years. The secrecy of US authorities, a lame initial response from the European Commission and the lack of detection methods for illegal GM produce have all compounded the crisis.
