New era looms for regulation of private water supplies

Proposals to apply EU rules on drinking water quality to Scotland’s private drinking water supplies were issued by the Scottish Executive in late March.1 They will turn the existing low-profile regulatory regime into one with significant duties on local authorities and new costs and offences for those responsible for private supplies - though a grant scheme will soften the blow.
