Making vehicles involves 10,000 chemicals, any one of which might fall foul of the EU's forthcoming REACH regime. In preparing for the new controls, Ford is building on its long experience of managing chemical risks and its collaborative work on a materials database. As the debate on REACH enters its final stages, Mamta Patel reports that the company is lobbying for changes to avoid costly surprises.
