Commission floats 2008 deadline for pesticides review

Up to 500 of the 834 existing active substances due for evaluation under the 1991 EC Directive on plant protection products will be withdrawn from sale in 2003, according to estimates from the European Commission. Most will not be defended by the pesticide manufacturers, but even so, the Commission admits that, with just 27 reviews completed as of July, it is unlikely to meet the 2003 deadline and wants to extend the process to 2008.
