Government denies complacency over water framework Directive
The Government has rejected a parliamentary committee's criticisms that its preparations for implementing the EU water framework Directive are palpably lacking in urgency - even though it is running many months behind its original timetable. But it has acknowledged that many gaps in ecological data and monitoring programmes remain to be filled - and confirmed for the first time that a range of public bodies will be placed under a statutory duty to give effect to the Directive.
