Conservationists attack road building and quarrying programme

The voracious demand for aggregates created by the road building programme should be reduced through major changes in transport and minerals policy, according to a report by the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE).1 By focussing on roads - the development over which the Government has direct control - CPRE hopes to reduce the amount of countryside lost to quarrying.
