Spat over Drax petcoke trial

Friends of the Earth has criticised the Environment Agency's handling of an application by Drax Power to conduct a trial of petcoke fuel, a cheap but high-sulphur alternative to coal. Behind the spat lie long-running questions over why coal-fired stations which have invested in flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) are struggling to remain competitive.
