Government inches ahead on environmental crime

A parliamentary committee's call on the Government to pursue a "bold and radical agenda" in improving sentencing for environmental crimes has received a lukewarm response.1 The Government has also turned down a recommendation for a national task force to combat fly-tipping. But there are signs of movement on the introduction of civil penalties generally, and fixed penalty notices in particular, for environmental offences.
