Treasury rejects incineration tax

The Government has formally rejected the idea of an incineration tax after publishing a study which attempted to place monetary valuations on the impacts of landfill and incineration - only to conclude that the margins of error were too large to draw meaningful conclusions. The new work - which raises awkward questions about the usefulness of cost-benefit analysis of environmental impacts - flies in the face of a similar study 11 years ago which was used to justify the original rate of landfill tax.
