DEFRA welcomes measures to clarify EU waste definitions

The UK has come out in support of proposals to clarify the EU definition of waste, in its response to a recent questionnaire from the European Commission. It would like clarification in relation to four priority waste streams initially: secondary aggregates, residues from the biological treatment of municipal waste, used cooking oil and pulverised fuel ash. However, the UK is opposed to proposals to set EU standards for the operation of waste sites or to extend the integrated pollution prevention and control regime to cover all waste sites.
