Allied Colloids: Shooting the chemical industry in the foot

A catalogue of management failures, omissions and errors which resulted in a serious fire at Allied Colloids' speciality chemical works near Bradford in July 1992 has been revealed by a report by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).1 The accident has important lessons for other chemical companies, and also appears likely to bring additional environmental safeguards in the form of official demands for containment arrangements for fire-fighting water and toxicity data on air pollutants formed in chemical fires.
