Northumbrian weighs bathing water quality against carbon savings

The Environment Agency is considering whether to allow Northumbrian Water to turn off ultra-violet disinfection lamps at six of its sewage treatment works in the North East during winter months. The plans are designed to cut carbon emissions but have upset surfers.
