Bathing water clean-up falls behind schedule

The full extent of the slippage in the programme to bring bathing waters in England and Wales into compliance with EC standards has been revealed in the National Rivers Authority's annual report on bathing water quality for 1994.1 About one-third of the clean-up schemes originally due for completion this year will not be finished until 1996 or beyond, and no schemes appear to be in hand for 20 waters which breached the EC rules last year.
