MEPs lay into proposal on energy standards for fridges

The European Parliament has persuaded the European Commission that a draft EC Directive setting minimum energy efficiency standards for refrigerators is too weak. During a debate on 26 October, it voted unanimously for the Commission's proposal to increase the minimum efficiency of fridges by 10% compared to 1992 standards by 2000 to be raised to 20%. The Commission indicated that it could agree to 15% - but an increase to 20%, possibly over a longer timescale, may yet be agreed.
