NERC embarrasses DTI with report on Brent Spar

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has got a good deal more than it bargained for when it commissioned the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) to advise whether deep sea disposal of the Brent Spar oil installation would be the "best practicable environmental option" (BPEO). NERC's report says that the decision-making process contained several major flaws and was shrouded in secrecy.1 And while the potential environmental impacts of dumping Brent Spar at sea may not be large enough to exclude this as an option, NERC scientists remain to be convinced that it is the BPEO.
