Commission outlines ideas for improving implementation

Environment Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard has pledged to "leave no stone unturned" in her efforts to improve access to the courts for environmental groups and individuals to address infringements of EC legislation. Financial sanctions against Member States which break EC environmental laws are also on the cards for the first time, and the Commission is mulling a move to propose minimum penalties for companies which infringe EC rules. Mrs Bjerregaard was speaking at a European Parliament hearing on implementation and enforcement of EC environmental legislation on 30 May. A Communication on the topic has been promised by the Commission later this year (ENDS Report 253, pp 24-27 ).
