Halocarbon use poses challenges for ozone, climate change policies

The refrigeration industry continues to pose the greatest difficulties in phasing out ozone-depleting CFCs and HCFCs, according to a report for the Department of the Environment (DoE).1 A tax on HCFCs is suggested as one way to curb leaks. The report also presents the first UK inventories and projections of emissions of HFCs, PFCs and SF6- future releases of which will assume growing significance for the Government's climate change strategy and influence the need for reductions in emissions of other greenhouse gases from other sectors.
