Lords urge bigger tax incentives for cleaner vehicles and fuels

Wide-ranging recommendations to stimulate the development and use of less polluting vehicles and fuels have been made in a report by the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology.1 It urges the Government to make more extensive use of the tax system to promote low-sulphur fuel, gas-powered vehicles and improvements in fuel efficiency, and to press for emission limits for the existing fleet at EC level. The report also recommends that official funding for longer-term research should give priority to the development of fuel cells and sustainable methods of producing hydrogen for them.
