Landfills to bear brunt of methane strategy

A strategy to reduce the EC's emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, by 40% from 1990 levels by 2010 was proposed by the European Commission in November.1 The paper is most specific in its proposals for EC legislation to curb methane emissions from landfills and gas pipelines - but plays down the scope for tackling emissions from livestock farms and the coal industry.
