Agency, Blue Circle get a roasting in cement kiln inquiry

The House of Commons Environment Committee has heard claims by environmental groups that the Environment Agency is guilty of "incompetent" regulation of cement kilns burning "secondary liquid fuel" (SLF), the controversial fuel made from industrial wastes. The Agency's own unimpressive performance before the Committee did little to help its case. MPs also heard new evidence on the economics of SLF blending and use and its impact on solvent recovery - but have again been presented with a mass of contradictory claims by different commercial interests in the waste disposal, solvent recovery and cement industries.
