DoE resists EC proposals on public access to the courts
Strong criticisms of some countries' compliance with EC environmental legislation have been voiced by the Department of the Environment (DoE) at a new House of Lords inquiry on the implementation and enforcement of EC rules. The DoE supports a recent European Commission proposal for minimum standards to be set at EC level for national inspectorates, and also sees a possible role for the European Environment Agency in checking on Member States' compliance records. But the UK appears set to oppose another proposal for EC guidelines to ease public access to the courts in environmental cases.
