LCA favours renewable surfactants over petrochemicals

Oleochemical surfactants made from renewable sources such as palm oil have a lower overall environmental impact than their petrochemical counterparts, according to a life-cycle assessment (LCA) study carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute.1 The LCA is one of the first to attempt to measure a product's ecotoxicity, and may revive the debate in the detergents industry about the risks which different surfactants pose to the aquatic environment.
