Sludge-to-sea ban boosts incineration, drying and landfill
Sewage sludge dumping at sea will cease in December, adding substantially to sewerage undertakers' sludge disposal burden. Much of the additional sludge will be incinerated or spread on land - often in the form of dried granules. However, some companies are investing in alternatives, including use as a fuel or in building materials. Companies in England and Wales appear to be prepared for the dumping phase-out, but Scotland's two largest water authorities will have great difficulty in meeting the deadline and are likely to resort to landfill as an interim measure.
