Early disputes over new review of EC chemicals policy

A wide-ranging review of EC chemicals policy is to be carried out by the European Commission by the end of the year. The review was set in train at the informal Environment Council in Chester on 25 April, where early divisions emerged over how the precautionary principle should be applied to chemicals and how far-reaching a reform of EC legislation is needed.
