Global treaty to control trade in hazardous chemicals

A binding UN Convention which will replace the voluntary "prior informed consent" (PIC) procedure for global trade in hazardous chemicals and pesticides was agreed in March by almost 100 countries. Although the PIC procedure is already mandatory in the EC, it is expected that EC legislation will be updated to include the tighter notification provisions in the Convention.
