Committee seeks fresh impetus for "greening Government" drive

Inadequate top-level leadership is behind the faltering progress of the "greening Government" initiative, according to a report by the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee. 1 Many of its key recommendations are aimed at invigorating the process by opening up the work of Green Ministers and the performance of individual Departments to public scrutiny. The report is also dismissive of high Whitehall estimates of the cost of environmental management systems, and urges the Government to set itself the same target on this front as it has done for the private sector.
