One in seven vehicles fail emission tests

One-seventh of the vehicles tested during trials of the new emissions enforcement powers provided by the Environment Act 1995 breached emission standards, according to Environment Minister Michael Meacher. 1 The trials are under way in seven local authority areas. Almost 8,000 vehicles have been tested, of which 1,300 (16%) failed. Councils have issued 450 fixed penalty notices for the most polluting vehicles.
