Commission beefs up proposals on take-back of old electrical goods
Manufacturers or importers of electrical goods will have to set up schemes to collect old equipment from households, as well as pay for its recycling, under the latest draft of an EC Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The new proposal may avoid the imposition of costs on local authorities. But the Commission has deferred until 2004 the setting of targets on WEEE collection rates on the grounds that reliable data on arisings are not available.
