Incineration Directive to clamp down on burning wastes as fuel

Much stricter emission controls on cement kilns and other industrial processes burning waste have been proposed by the European Commission in a draft EC Directive on non-hazardous waste incineration. Proposals to tighten emissions of nitrogen oxides from municipal incinerators would also hit UK operators - but the waste industry has secured a delay until 2004 before the rules would apply to existing plants.
