Severn Trent, Northumbrian and Sutton and East Surrey Water companies were all prosecuted in October for supplying water unfit for human consumption. Severn Trent was fined £8,000 for supplying water described by one customer as "brown sludge", while Northumbrian was fined £6,000 for supplying water with "a horrible colour". And Sutton and East Surrey Water was fined £5,000 after customers complained of receiving "water like skimmed milk with sediment."
