A blast from the past by the CBI
The Confederation of British Industry has never been the greatest enthusiast for environmental legislation, but it appears currently to be going through a distinct anti-regulation phase. Its new President, Sir Clive Thompson, devoted half of his address to the organisation's recent annual conference to inveighing against the "creeping paralysis of unwanted regulation." In similar vein, the CBI spoke critically about a growing trend to prescriptive legislation when launching a discussion document on environmental regulation in December (see pp 3-4 ).
