Extravagant claims for biodegradable plastic packaging

A biodegradable plastic film used in packaging is being promoted as "environmentally friendly" on the highly questionable grounds that it will create more void space for future tipping by accelerating waste degradation. Refuse sacks made of the material are already on sale in supermarkets, and products are soon to be packaged in it. A claim that the plastic will degrade "harmlessly" to form water and carbon dioxide is also misleading.
