GM food labelling rules undermined by lack of reliable tests

Regulations to enable the enforcement of EC legislation requiring the labelling of foods containing genetically modified (GM) soya and maize came into force in Britain in March.1 But the continuing lack of standard tests for detecting GM material and of an accepted threshold for trace GM contamination of non-GM foods will make the new rules difficult to enforce for the time being.
