Pollution fine for Anglian Water

Anglian Water was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,600 after admitting polluting a Bedfordshire brook with sludge from its Letchworth sewage works. Five kilometres of the Pix brook ran black and foul smelling after an overflow of sludge at the works in June 1998. The case was brought by the Environment Agency under section 85(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991.
