Reform of water abstraction licensing finalised

The Government has finalised plans for a new system of abstraction licensing intended to put the management of water resources on a more sustainable footing. 1 Key measures include the imposition of time limits on all significant licences and a softening of compensation requirements for the removal of abstraction rights. The water industry remains opposed to the changes, arguing that time-limited abstractions may make major new water resource developments "financially unviable".
