Quarry firms in fresh bid to ward off tax

A revised package of voluntary measures to ward off an aggregates tax was presented to Ministers by the Quarry Products Association (QPA) in July. 1 The industry claims that its package would cost £104 million per year and bring environmental benefits worth £159 million - although some questionable or unexplained assumptions were used in deriving these figures. Meanwhile, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) has raised the stakes by publishing higher estimates of the industry's environmental costs. 2
