US studies call benefits of GM crops into question

Two US studies published in July have cast doubt on the value of genetically modified (GM) crops to both farmers and the environment. The higher yields and reductions in pesticide spraying promised by biotechnology businesses for GM varieties have materialised in only some cases - and even higher yields have not always offset the technology's extra costs to farmers.
