Human link to algal blooms "highly likely"

South-west England was plagued with red tides in August, while Scotland faced extensive restrictions on shellfish harvesting because of algal toxins. Many specialists maintain that such events are natural, but there is a growing body of opinion that human influences - increasing nitrogen levels in groundwater and deposition from the air - play an important role.
