Swedes, UK in new row over EC chemicals programme

Fresh strains in the much criticised EC programme for assessing the safety of older "existing" chemicals have appeared this summer following a decision by the Swedish Government to ban several brominated flame retardants. Unilateral action has also been taken by the Netherlands to ban major uses of chlorinated paraffins. The UK has reacted by threatening to reduce its participation in the programme if individual Member States continue to act ahead of the completion of risk reduction strategies at EC level.
