Wildlife sites remain under abstraction threat

Plans to protect two wildlife sites from the effects of water abstraction were left hanging in November after the Government said their costs and benefits should be "re-appraised". The plans to protect the Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) - costed at about £130 million - were excluded from water companies' investment plans despite pleas from English Nature and the Environment Agency. Meanwhile, a report on the effects of abstraction on conservation sites by the two agencies reveals that some 171 sites are currently under investigation. 1
