Struggle to improve UK bathing waters continues

Compliance with EC bathing water quality standards improved in 1999, according to the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR). The improvement was largely due to more favourable weather and the judicious designation of new waters - and the figures may not persuade the European Commission to drop its threatened legal action over the UK's failure to meet the standards 14 years after the deadline.
