Thames Water fined for Gatwick pollution

Thames Water pleaded guilty on 2 November to polluting the Gatwick stream with sewage. The incident occurred after two out of four pumps at Crawley sewage treatment works were out of action last March. Crawley magistrates heard that one pump was under repair and another failed suddenly. The two remaining pumps were unable to keep up and sewage overflowed to the stream once the work's storm tanks were full. Thames was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay £700 in costs to the Environment Agency.
