Row over downgrading of industry inspectors

A dispute has broken out within the Environment Agency over the pay and grading of industry inspectors. A recent regrading exercise has slashed the salaries of incoming recruits. Union representatives claim the move will prejudice the Agency's ability to do its job - at a time when it is already under fire for sending inexperienced officers into the field.
