Water industry bids to relax EC drinking water rules

Water companies in the EC have launched a new drive to secure amendments to the 1980 Directive on drinking water quality. A report issued by their European federation, Eureau, has urged a series of changes which would amount to a major relaxation of the Directive but would, the industry argues, place it on a more scientific footing and reduce expenditure which adds little to consumer safety.1
