Waste competence rules force few site closures for time being
Only two waste management sites in the Thames region were closed down for failing to meet the 10 August deadline on technical competence, according to a report presented to the Agency's regional environment protection advisory committee (REPAC) in October. Forthcoming Agency deadlines intended to bring the industry into belated compliance with the law will require a further 1,000 waste managers to gain statutory qualifications over the next 14 months - and test the Agency's resolve in enforcing the legislation.
